Set in the beautiful grounds of Wairarapa College, just a few minutes walk from Central Masterton, Pōto College House is made up of two dormitories, the dining room, common spaces, sports facilities and a manager’s office. We have large grounds and a school farm right at our fingers tips, it is truly the best of provincial New Zealand living.
We have a fantastic team caring for our students. The hostel management team live on site, as do several other couples who are our ‘Hostel Parents’. They are here to make sure that everyone feels safe and secure during what can be a big adjustment in their life. Poto College House caters for 60+ boarders, both boys and girls from Years 9-13 in a 5 ½ day capacity. Established as a boys’ boarding house initially in 1924, College House is steeped in history and tradition. As a co-educational boarding establishment it is unique to the Wairarapa and is the College’s point of difference offering an affordable option to remote rural children from the Wairarapa and those from neighbouring districts.
Boarding is an amazing experience for students. We strive to make it structured, fun and secure – a home away from home. Hostel life is filled with exciting activities with a strong emphasis on prep time in the evenings and support to take part in extra curricular activities.
Catering for years 9 – 13, WaiCol is a co-educational public school based in Masterton. They offer a comprehensive curriculum that gives learners the chance to excel in their chosen fields. Their goal is to create a thriving, student-centred learning environment, educating students for their future. Check out the video below to find out more.
The boarding costs for 2020 are $12,500 per year.
Casual boarders (maximum 3 nights per week) pay $75 per night.
A one-off bond payment of $750 is required for each student at all year levels at the beginning of their first year only.

Menus change every day, below is an example of a standard menu.
Breakfast: Cereal, toast, eggs.
Lunch: Salad bar, chicken and vegetable stir fry.
Dinner: Beef lasagne, seasonal vegetables.
There are also vegetarian and allergen options available for those with special dietary requirements.
All students have mandatory prep time after school to make sure they have a quiet space to complete homework and are supported in their learning outside the classroom.
Using the van trip system, all students are able to take part in any number of after school activities. The boarding house has two vans which are on the road every day to make sure students don’t miss any off-site extra curriculars.
We have an active fundraising committee that runs several events per year. If you are interested in joining the committee please mention this to hostel staff and they will be happy to point you in the direction of the current chairperson.
The Boarding Hostel Manager will demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and management skills necessary to meet the Poto College House Trust’s goals of providing a supportive, positive, caring and inclusive environment for both teenage boys and girls who often have very different needs: welfare is paramount.
The Manager will lead the hostel team of hostel staff and oversee the catering and domestic team to ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided for all boarding students.
The Boarding Hostel Manager lives on-site and the renumeration package includes accommodation, electricity, broadband and meals.
To be successful the applicant needs to have:
– Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
– Genuine empathy for adolescent boys and girls of all. backgrounds and the ability and flexibility to understand and meet their needs.
– Strong decision making, planning, management skills with the ability to self-reflect/review.
– The ability to co-ordinate a team of staff within the boarding house and work with and make connections with key personnel beyond the boarding house such as the College and community leaders.
– Proven financial and business acumen would be an advantage.
